Let’s talk London, London.
What’s your favourite thing about London? Where are the best secret restaurants? What is it about the city that annoys you the most? What boggles the mind of foreigners the first time they arrive here? Are Canadians usually patriots or nationalists? Do you think Canadian culture is difficult to adapt to, or is it simple? What are your tricks to survive in this weather?
If, like us, you started to call Canada home in your adult life, then these are questions you have asked yourself, your friends, your partner, and the lady standing next to you at the bus stop. Adapting to a new country isn’t always easy, but it is much easier when you know you’re not alone in feeling nervous, excited, frustrated, and happy all at the same time.
Friendly Aliens, LondonFuses’s new podcast, wants to be a support system and guide to life, not just in Canada, but in London particularly. As newcomers, we are striving to get to know the city and its people. And with that, we will need your help. Whether you were born here or you happen to be a newcomer too, we want to talk to you.
Wait, who are you and what is this, exactly?
Like many others here in London, we’re two people from different corners of the earth who now call Canada home. Oshi left Sri Lanka for Canada four years ago, and Amanda moved all the way from southern Brazil only last year. Oshi is a whisky and tea drinker, while Amanda leans on the wine and coffee side of things. We’re both LondonFuse contributors and lovers of all things local. We’re here building our lives and acclimatizing to the ways of life in London.
This show was born out of common confusions we’ve shared. The creation of this podcast felt organic – it’s about being in a new place, feeling alone, trying to understand and adapt to a new culture. Our experience showed us that having honest conversations about our experiences can help us navigate life better, and we want to extend this conversation to a larger group of people.
And there’s more! It won’t just be we two aliens you’ll encounter, you’ll hear from special guests too. As we go on, we would love to hear from you, and we want to know it all – the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Why should I listen to you?
Well, what else are you going to listen to while your wait for the LTC bus that is late once again? There’s something for everyone in this podcast – especially if you want to learn more about London, ON (and Canadian culture generally) and what being an immigrant is all about.
Expect a lot of cheesiness and rambling on this journey to understanding the Forest City. We will come out with episodes every month right here on LondonFuse. Tune in and let’s have a conversation!
