Looking to make your weekday summer nights a little more magical while supporting local businesses? We’ve got you covered.

On a warm evening on the last day of May, a corner in Blackfriars neighbourhood was converted into a bohemian paradise. Purdy Natural and Lunah Life hosted the first Boho Bazaar Night Market of 2018 on May 31, also marking the one-year anniversary of the venture.

As you walk up Mount Pleasant towards Purdy Natural, the music becomes louder, and the sounds of laughter and the buzz of lighthearted conversation draw you into the space.

Walking through the beautifully decorated courtyard, you hear people greet each other with “Hey, it’s been a while!” and “It’s so great to see you!” every few steps. The atmosphere is intoxicatingly mellow.

Market-goers relax on comfy pillows under string lights, listening to live music, and enjoying food and drinks from local vendors. Where else could you want to be on a Thursday night?

Put together

The experience feels curated, in the best way – and that’s on purpose. The night market consists of a rotating list of local artisan and food vendors to ensure the event is unique each time it’s held and can provide opportunities to new local start-ups.

Rokhsana Purdy of Purdy Natural and Nicole Kirkpatrick of Lunah Life had the idea for an outdoor market over a year ago after they noticed an absence of fun things to do on a weeknight in London.

They had the perfect space right behind Purdy Natural, all the right local contacts, and eventually, a liquor license thanks to 10Eighteen Café.

Inspired by Moroccan outdoor markets and leaning on the bohemian trend, Rokhsana and Nicole reached out to Pamela Scharback Creative for help with the name, and the Boho Bazaar Night Market was born.

Sense of community

Collaboration and a sense of community are evident in the night market. With Purdy Natural and Lunah Life leading the charge, Boho Bazaar truly is a group effort with Shangrila Yoga providing the space, Ashleigh Pluss from Rove Media providing the branding, Greens Galore decorating the space, Justin Plet Music and Cliché providing music, and 10Eighteen Café and Booch Organic Kombucha providing drinks, as well as a handful of hardworking volunteers.

They held five monthly night markets in 2017 from May to September and have added a sixth event in October this year due to popular demand.

Healthy focus

Holistic living is a prominent theme with both the night market and its organizers. Rokhsana and Nicole make their own brands of all-natural skincare, which they developed over seven years ago after noticing a lack of options for natural skin care, not only in London but across the country. Their focus on healthy choices and all-natural products is something they bring to the night market.

Be sure to check out their Facebook event page to see the list of local artisan and food vendors at upcoming markets! Vendors at the May night market included Hen + Bear, Peaceful People Society, Bare Bones Jewelry, Desi’s London, The New New Age, The Wolf and the Hawk, Mandust, and Row Row Apparel & Play, as well as Yoda’s Kitchen, Perogi Me, Real Pops, and 10Eighteen Cafe who provided a range of food and drink options to meet many dietary needs/choices.

And local artisan and food vendors aren’t all that’s in store for you. Interactive activities for old and young alike, including an Instagram-worthy photo booth, free art table by Hoto Art Therapy, and live music, make it a spot to hang out all evening.

All are welcome

When asked what their favourite part of the night market is, both Rokhsana and Nicole agreed, “Being able to host a space where everyone feels safe and welcome, and where people can come together to support each other.”

If you’re looking for a feel-good Thursday night, I highly recommend you check it out!
