The Palace Theatre/London Community Players presents “The Nerd”
by Larry Shue, produced by Christoper F. Parker and directed by Rob Faust.
The show: Nerd (also Nurd) Noun: A foolish or contemptible person who lacks social skills or is boringly studious. Faced with social obligations and a long-owed debt, a long lost “friend” arrives for a visit and it soon becomes apparent the guest is a Nerd. One uproarious incident after another until the host starts to contemplate violence… a dire development which is staved off by a surprising “twist” ending of the Play.
The Quote: Have you ever had an uninvited house guest overstay his or her welcome? What started as a pleasant reunion, quickly goes south with the guest’s irritating and intrusive behaviour? That’s the situation on steroids in “The Nerd”, a riotous, laugh-out-loud comedy by playwrite Larry Shue, who also penned another popular comedy, “The Foreigner”. His success was short-lived, however, when he died in a plane crash at the age of 39. While “The Nerd” touches on themes of love, friendship and loyalty, the shows main goal is to amuse rather than enlighten. The sight gags and snappy dialogue ensure an evening of entertainment and rollicking delight for the audience. A tragi-comedy, which really describes life, without the laughter there can be no tears.
