In this world of instantaneity and consumer driven promises, how often have you wished to be good at something -- tried it, weren't, and given up? Or maybe not even attempted at all out of fear of not being good enough?
Ira Glass (from "This American Life") provides one of the best observations I've ever come across about taste and creative work. Take what is said in this clip and apply it to any medium.
In my own work, I'm still far from closing the gap between my taste and what i'm producing. But every hour I spend on something is an hour where the work I'm producing gets closer and closer to what I want it to be; matching my taste.
No one is born with the ability to play guitar well, design awesome posters, or shoot great video, etc etc. The only way to get good is to do it, keep doing it, then keep doing it some more.
I keep doing it for a few reasons, probably the most important being that nothing else is quite as satisfying as looking at your own work and thinking to yourself "this is brilliant."
