Noise Level is an ethno-ambient, electronic sound project designed to evoke the world of film soundtracks. The music mutates and manipulates sound effects and original samples, while at the same time exploring the commonalities between noise and music.
Keyboardist Ed Matthews officially began the Noise Level sound project in 2004 in London, Ontario. At that time, compositions were exclusively sample-driven, with little regard to live performance.
The Liquid Sky, Noise Level’s first release in June, 2009, featured a variety of styles of electronic and ambient music. It was favourably reviewed in Scene and in the September issue of Exclaim. By the end of summer, it had climbed to the Number 3 position in the CHRW Radio Western’s Top Thirty Countdown (wk. ending Aug 18th). Early in 2010, it re-appeared on the Top Thirty Charts and ranked Number 1 in the Electronics Chart.
Taking the World Apart, Noise Level’s second recording, was released a month later. Compared to its predecessor, with its undercurrents of industrial darkwave, Taking the World Apart instead sought to establish a more down-tempo, chill-out vibe. The latter featured short solo piano works and exotic world beats, contrasted by a lush layer of buzzy, electronic textures.
Noise Level's contribution to the London music scene in 2009 resulted in being nominated for CHRW Radio Western's Local Artist of the Year Contest, and, more recently, Scene Magazine's 2010 London Music Awards (in the Electronics category).
Conceptual Continuity, Noise Level’s newest release, combines industrial textures with hypnotic rhythms, yet also seeks to explore a wider sonic palette. Here, overdriven, E-Bow guitars soar over reggae rhythms; there, delayed vibes float on a sea of jazzy space chatter. The hope is to create pieces that exist both in recorded form, yet lend themselves to improvisation and manipulation in a live setting.
Noise Level continues to push toward an Impressionist blend of ethnographic World beats and lush electronic textures – and a Romantic longing for the Infinte.
