Artist Statement
Barbara Olsthoorn's artwork focuses on the relationship of energies in the universe with each colour representing a unique element and mood. Every piece contains numerous elements of texture, colour, shapes and shading effects. Within the layers, suggestive forms develop and underlying details begin to surface. She uses bold colours and strong contrasts that evoke an emotional response. Her style showcases an intuitive understanding of how to manipulate paint and other media in a way that creates a natural transition from one element to the next.
The artwork is done on various sizes of gallery wrapped canvas and explores multiple forms of media including acrylic paint, moulding paste, fabrics, string, spray paint, glazes, epoxy resin, metal, and anything else that creates interesting textures to explore the three dimensional realm. Because of the artist's background in photography, she focuses on the effects of lighting with highlights and shadows.
