Multi-Media Reading Performance: The Beauty of Transgression: A Berlin Memoir
The Beauty of Transgression is Danielle de Picciotto’s memoir of Berlin. The book brings together her accounts of musicians, fashion designers, and club owners as well as other artists and their milieus with unique first-hand descriptions of milestone places and events. It is not only a fascinating collection of stories about key individuals, but also gives an authentic and detailed overview of why Berlin has become one of the most appealing metropolises for creative people from around the world.
Danielle de Picciotto’s intimate text and personal selection of images penetrate through hype and commercialization to make The Beauty of Transgression a uniquely genuine documentation of the creative history of Berlin’s underground. The reading will be accompanied by music and images by Alexander Hacke of the band Einstürzende Neubauten.

Screening of the Documentary Film: Einstürzende Neubauten
Directed by Danielle di Picciotto, 2010, 90 min
Originally from West Berlin, Einstürzende Neubauten is a German post-industrial band that formed in 1980. One of their “trademarks” is the use of custom-built
instruments–predominantly made out of scrap metal and building tools–and noises, in addition to standard musical instruments. Einstürzende Neubauten celebrated their thirtieth anniversary in 2010 with a tour through Europe.
During this tour they screened an unreleased documentary by Danielle de Picciotto, which features their concerts, interviews and music videos. It is a fascinating view on how the band developed.
To accompany the first screening of this documentary in Canada, Alexander Hacke will be in attendance for a Q&A.

Alexander Hacke is a cult hero of mine. I can't wait to meet him.
Does the box in the right hand corner indicate the date for this is August 4th? This sounds incredible. Anybody else heading to Electric Eclectics for Hacke and the Spasm band? And Doig-Phaneuf, Ian spinning all the chart toppers in the forest.
That's right the event is on Thursday, August 4. It should be great.
This is going to be great. A few of us caught this set at EE over the weekend, and it was fantastic. Well looking forward to the doc and the Q&A afterward too!
Yeah, this is gonna be great. We were divided on the Hacke/de Piccioto performance - I thought it was weak. But most of my pals (Doig-Phaneuf included) all dug it, so what do I know. We all agreed that Hacke and the Spasm Band killed it. I loved US Girls, but that Spasm Band performance wins top prize.
This doc is gonna be great. Hacke is the coolest mofo since the Fonze.
