Market Lane is finally open! Well, on weekends at least. Go check it out folks!

Isn’t the bench fantastic? The space will really come alive in warmer weather when the leaves return. How about the underlit seating, eh?

At a recent talk put on by the London Society of Architects, the designer Joseph Fry gave a preview of the lights’ functionality. It’s gonna be good folks. The photo below (from Fry's site) doesn't do them justice. They can do any colour and pattern you can imagine. Plus, the lights will be programmable by Fanshawe's media students.

Now it just needs pedestrians and programming! Oh, and it would have been nice if the Skating Championships would have put it on their map for tourists.

The light demonstration was impressive. I really like the idea of handing over the creative control of the lights to students to experiment with. In fact, the best part about this space is the way the architect designed the area for the public programs. In his presentation at Museum London, I enjoyed his ideas for creating swings between the frames. I'm looking forward to seeing how Londoners use this area (through the week).

This has always been a space with so much potential and its so amazing to see it finally being used for something so creative. I won't forget the one lonely bench that used to be there but am so, so, so happy with how this turned out! This is so great for the space and area themselves and just for the city in general.

Ooh--can't wait to walk through this space. I wonder about its potential for pop-up film screenings.

The lights are just lovely. A great place to bring a late night snack and a date in summer. Will make a note in my little black book.

I agree Llama - Market Lane could be the best thing for London's dating scene since the health unit started offering cheap birth control.

Check it:

Market Lane Preview this Friday March 8 at 7 pm.

Please join Mayor Joe Fontana and guests this Friday for a preview of the new Market Lane and a sneak peak of the programmable light canopy composed of 1,430 LED coloured lights. The canopy creates dynamic displays with moving, colour-shifting lights. Different atmospheres are created reflecting the changing of the seasons, special holidays and events.

Market Lane will be fully opened for the public to enjoy from March 8 - 17. The Lane will then be partially open on weekends to allow exterior architectural work to proceed safely. Anticipated full re-opening of Market Lane is planned for June 2013.
